taking care of YOU
This year has been a bit of a roller-coaster for me. So many amazing joys, mixed with the deep pain of loss. And over time, I’ve noticed all these ups and downs taking it’s toll on my body, my connection with the ones I love, and my heart. If you’ve experienced deep pain, you know what I’m talking about. Pain can come in many different forms, perhaps you’ve walked through a season of depression, sickness, or difficulty. Regardless, all these things, if we don’t take care walking through them can reek havoc on our bodies. This is where I’ve found myself recently. So I’ve made some changes, and I hope to make a few more. This is by no means expert advice, but simply my honest journey.
It’s easy to neglect our bodies. We are BUSY, and there are constant to-do lists, activities, meetings, you name it. And all the while, you add anything like pain, stress, depression, difficult circumstances, and it effects our health, our sleep, our energy levels. We are already SO busy, that there’s no time to take care of ourselves and figure out what’s causing all these things to take place.
Am I right?
I found myself here recently, and started reading up on the Whole 30, a 30 day diet where you eat only whole foods to reset your system. And here’s the thing, I’m not really into diets, I never have been, in fact, I don’t think I’ve done a single diet in my life before this!!!
So why now?
As I was reading through the reason and heart behind the diet, I literally started weeping. And I just KNEW, that I needed to do it. I needed to start looking after my body in a more intentional way. I had SO many of the symptoms that they talked about, and honestly I had begun to classify them as “normal”. But since when is waking up every day feeling bloated normal? Since when is getting headaches on the daily, and being completely exhausted normal? I decided it was time for me to take my health into my own hands, to be intentional about what I eat, and why I eat it. And just a little plug for the Whole 30 - I’m feeling a lot better. It’s one step in the right direction for me.
In addition, I’m making a real effort to go to bed earlier. Once my kids go to bed I tend to push the hours of the clock trying to get as much work done as possible, most nights this means staying up past midnight, only to wake to my kids by 6:30am. NOT ENOUGH SLEEP! It’s time to change this - because sleep matters, and it affects our health greatly. Women are said to need at least 8 hours of sleep a night, and the best sleep happens from 10pm - 6am. So 10pm it is, I’ve bumped up my bedtime, and I’m hoping this will help me have MORE energy during the day so I can get more done by the time the clock hits bed time.
So what about you?
Are you on the path to wholeness or are you going the other direction? Whatever it looks like for you, I’d encourage you to take TIME to make the changes to LOVE your body, and CARE for it. Your health IS your future, and taking care of it once you’re suffering all kinds of ailments won’t be nearly as effective as caring for it NOW.
